CD ReviewsNothing Less Than His Best Down Home Hip to the Jive | 08/14/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Blues in My Heart incorporates two sessions with Dolo Coker.
These two sessions can be heard on separate cds, i.e. Out of Nowhere and Crisscraft, both recorded for the Muse label in 1975. I debated whether to purchase these two sessions separately, each as a single cd, or together on Blues in My Heart ... I would recommend you purchase the latter, two-fer cd. First, the reproduction of sound for these two sessions is first-rate quality; secondly, the trifold insert contains worthwhile information and photos, and finally these recordings add up to over seventy-seven minutes of Sonny's very best work. I love practically all fourteen selections for the bluesy bop sound he conveys, whether the tempos are swinging or paced slowly as ballads. Both the selections, Blues in My Heart and All The Things You Are, have superbly rendered alternate takes. Dolo Coker's piano comping and solos along with guitarist's Ray Crawford's contributions are the perfect comps for the stellar work of altoist, Sonny Criss. This CD, Blues In My Heart, is a collection of tunes from one of great stylists of the blues idiom. Highly recommended!" |
