"I suppose that most blues harp history students know-this man was the first Sonny Boy! Before he died violently in 1948 he laid down these tracks. His sidemen here are men like Big Maceo on piano, Tampa Red and Big Bill Broonzy on guitar. Outstanding harp! The original version of Junior Wells' (and the Rolling Stones') Stop Breaking Down, Hoodoo Hoodoo (Man Blues). Sonny Boy had a distinctly country blues sound, yet, on this CD we hear strong hints of urban blues. Listen to Tampa Red's guitar on You're An Old Lady. Sonny Boy's sound was softer than Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller)'s sound. Yet he was a giant of blues harmonica and influenced people like Junior Wells and Little Walter."
