CD Reviews

For all you curious A.F.I. fans

"This review is pretty much for all you A.F.I. fans who want to know what this record is all about. I was in the same position and couldn't find a single review that really helped me. If your one of those fans that likes everything from Answer that and stay Fashionable, up to Sing the Sorrow, your gonna love this album. It requires being really frexible and being able to be open minded about the style in which Davey is singing. If your one of those die hard Very Proud of Ya fans, this may be a little to out there for you, unless your a fan of the Misfits. I personnally love anything that Davey Havok does with his voice and loved the sound of this album. It's got a really strong Misfits sound to it and Davey pulls it off pretty well. Davey Havok and a Death Rock sound, mix really well together and the lyrics are very much like A.F.I. ones, seeing as though he wrote them. Overall it's a good record with some stand out awesome songs and every A.F.I. fan should be interested in hearing it out."
Son of Sam(hain) Indeed!

"This album is almost like a Samhain tribute band, featuring several members of Samhain. We have Todd Youth, Steve Zing, and London May, who were the Samhain touring band of 1999 and the Danzig-like vocals of the amazing Davey Havok. In addition, the Mighty G.D. himself makes a couple of appearances throughout the disc and so do the other members of his band, Joey Castillo and Howie Pyro. The songs are all in the Samhain/Danzig vein, but with Davey's flair for gang vocals, huge harmonies, and awesome melodies. Make no mistake, Havok is not a Danzig impersonator and Son of Sam are not a Samhain rip-off, but more of a tribute. At times the gang vocals can be a bit much, but other than that, this is a solid album with great songs and musicianship. Unfortunately, Son of Sam have to be kept on side project status since Havok has AFI and Youth is currently with Danzig. Let's hope that this isn't just a one time project and that Havok, Youth, Zing, and May do another album in the near future."

"I have been an AFI fan ever since I heard of Sing the Sorrow. I moved backwards from there, and now love all of their music from their Answer That days to the present. A friend told me about this album and I wanted to see what it was, so I ordered it.

It's amazing. There is nothing more to say. The vocals are Havok's, and there's nothing you can do to improve that. The lyrics are deep and poetic.

More than anything, I have to say that this album made me explore further: I am now a huge fan of the Misfits, Danzig and Samhain. No other album has done this for me. I only wish that "Songs from the Earth" weren't a one-time deal."
