CD Reviews

Eliza Gilkyson Masterpieces
Kevin J. Roberts | 03/27/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Don't let that other review discourage you. There are FIVE Eliza Gilkyson solo songs on this CD, and they are excellent. One is an early version of a song she recorded later with different lyrics. Several of these Eliza songs stand out as true masterpieces of her work, and are a must. The other singer's solo pieces are also worthwhile. But this item is a real rarity, and you should grab it while you can. Recorded circa 2001. Even one great work from Eliza is certainly worth the cost of the disc."
Enjoyable but not memorable

"An item I must admit I only bought given it features Eliza Gilkyson, performing together with Iain Matthews (of Southern Comfort fame) and a Dutch singer I know nothing about (Ad Vanderveen). The project seems to have developed out of all three having spent time together in the Netherlands and Texas and been financed by a certain Yvonne Ellenbaas, who may be the owner of teh Perfect Pitch label on which the CD is released.

With such talent on offer, the end result while well recorded is ultimately lacking in any real impact or energy. In large part this seems due to the fact that while song contributions are equally shared, the actual performances are very much solo and not "group" efforts with only limited back up singing and acting as support musicians to each other. Also, sadly the songs are not very memorable even if more group empathy did exist. Iain Matthews has shown before he is capable of much stronger songs and the Eliza items in two cases (Heart of a Man and Fall into the Night) have subsequently been much better recorded on her later "Lost & Found" release.

For die hard fans of the three performers only I fear."
