A nice collection of songs that hark back to an earlier time

"If you like the music of O Brother or Cold Mountain, then you will undoubtedly appreciate this CD. The music from the Civil War era may sound archaic to some modern ears but this collection works well as both a historical record of the time and as an emotional collection of music that stands on it's own merits. The recordings aren't new by any means but this collection seems fresh during an age when consolidation and corporate interests dominate the music industry. There are songs that paint a picture of how a soldier lived during the Civil War ("Marching Through Georgia", "Write a Letter to My Mother") as well as patriotic songs meant to inspire weary soldiers ("Maryland My Maryland", "Battle Hymn of the Republic"). Other standouts are the instrumental "Soldier's Joy" by fiddler Buddy Spicher and Benny Martin's "Dixie". Overall, a nice collection which will be of interest to long-time aficionados of traditional music as well as new listeners."
