Within the confines, or lack thereof, of VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) lies a new level of musicianship, achieved through the hard work poured into supporting their self-titled debut and their subsequent hit album, IOWA.... more » Produced by Rick Rubin, Vol 3 not only captures the band?s strengths to this point- it sees the spore that is Slipknot exploding in all directions. The songs on this daring effort transcend traditional hard music structure, and will surprise the uninitiated with their dynamic appeal. Masterful guitar work, visceral drum beats, and a newly-expanded vocal range are highlights of this work that Corey Taylor (#8) calls "both brutal and beautiful." Much of the creative inspiration in evidence on the new album is owed to Rubin and his reputedly- haunted mansion, in which the band lived while recording VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). "You can really feel (the effect of the mansion) on the album. There were ghosts in the machine, in the equipment! . Things would freeze, things would loop for no reason at all. It was strange," adds Taylor. Paul Gray (#2) comments on what Rubin brought to the table? "Rick brought a huge amount of open mindedness - normally 9 different people trying different things can be tough - Rick got us to just throw all our preconceived notions out the window. He was able to integrate bits and pieces of everyone's ideas." The first single off VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES), "Duality" is, "lyrically, what you might think... we've been through a lot as a band and the lyrics really reflect our maintaining faith and the perseverance of all 9 of us," says Joey Jordison (#1). "Duality" represents the album well in its unwillingness to compromise the band?s rock foundation and its ability to be aurally appealing and melodic at the same time. Other songs of note on the record, "Before I Forget" and "Vermillion" underline the statement made by "Duality", with their dark melodies and fierce instrumentation. "Before I Forget" is about rising above the bull*#!t and being a person, not a human. It's about saying what you mean and meaning what you say - taking zero bull#!*t." adds Taylor, "and Vermillion is a stalker's love song, shot thru his eyes. It's kind of a does he or doesn't he type thing - it's left open for you to decide."

Slipknot at its Best

"No matter what most people say I still think that this is Slipknots best album. Most so called "Maggots" would Say Iowa is the best and Slipknot sold out with this album with the stone sour voice and acoustic songs. But to me its not selling out if its still good.

Prelude 3.0 - Very diffrent oppening its actally a song with great lyrics and it gets you ready for blister. 9-10

The Blister Exists - Best song on the album. Great from start to finnish with every body in the band doing there part. Even if you dont like heavy music you will still like the drumline middle. 10-10

Three Nil -a very good song that reminds me of Scream from the bonus edition. My only complaint is the "this is not my..." part. 9-10

Duality - Not a bad song but a little over rated. It can do with out the "All I got is insane" part. 7-10

Opium of of the People - Mick and Jim show off there guitar skills in the intro. Its a pretty good song but I dont know what the title means. 7-10

Circle - Great song. Its not your typical acoustict song but Corey really shows off his singing and lyrical ability. 10-10

Welcome - This is a average song nothing special about it. 7-10

Vermilion - Great song especially the bridge and the solo. 9-10

Pulse of the Maggots - This is a good song the guitar in the begining make it. 8-10

Before I Forget - This is one of the many songs on this album that proves that its better the Iowa and Slipknot combined. This song proves that the lyrics improved. The intro is one of the best of the album. 10-10

Vermilion, Pt.2 - The better of the Vermilions, Corey shows off his vocals. 10-10

The Nameless - I would like to know what was going through slipknots mind when they wrote this song. Its so unique There is no other song like it. It goes from fast paced screaming and machine gun guitar to slow singing and acoustic guitars. Its still one of the best songs on the album even though its very wired. 10-10

The Virus of Life - A song with very disturbing lyrics and pretty different musicly. 7-10

Danger - Keep Away - A good song thats very simple musicly but very good vocaly. More proof that slipknot evolved. 9-10

Lyrics - way better then previous albums. No F this F that. Corey has really improved.

Vocals - Well in this album theres actually singing in most songs

Guitar - Some very good riffs and added solos this time.

Drums - drums were good from the begining but I like the Drum solo in this album.

Samples, Turntables, and Keyboard - Im not an expert on these but they sonded good whenever they wanted to put them in.

Noteworthy as the Most Progressive and Least Explicit Record

"What can I say? I never thought I'd even give Slipknot the time of day. I find their image disgusting and gimmicky, their lyrical content disturbing and twisted and their entire message and stance quite unappealing. I know from my research that this album was conceived in a half drunken state, and that the band was consciously trying to avoid explicit swearing (to prove a point to critics.) Furthermore, I understand the obvious and unsavory mindset that bands like "Slipknot" are planting in the younglings of America. Violence is preached, insanity is empathized and anger is encouraged.

At this point, my 4 star rating is probably looking like a pretty crazy fluke. It is... I simply cannot deny the fact that (despite what they may have intended) Slipknot has created a truly savory and hard rocking album with "Vol. 3." The songwriting is spot on for hooking fans (and non fans) and the performance is masterful. The vocals are harsh, poignant and absolutely mind blowing... on top of that, the guitars, drums and occasional synth accents are all produced and executed to perfection. While I can't vouch for any of the lyrics on this record, I can say that I haven't heard any strong swearing upon my repeated listens, and the lyrics that I CAN understand aren't particularly visceral or disturbing.

Bottom Line: If you are a discerning listener who understands the value of extremely well rendered metal... you won't be able to deny this record's power. I, for one, wish this gem wasn't recorded by such a dark and tormented group of individuals... but then, you gotta take the good from what you can! And this album is very good..."
