"This CD offers Dvorak's complete Slavonic Dances, Opus 46 & 72, on one CD.
Dvorak is a master of combining serious classical styles with folk harmonies and rhythms of his homeland. The famous Dance No 1 and 8 open and close Opus 46 in an exultant manner, but both are given a rhythmic treatment that just seems askew. Dance 2, with its wailing Eastern European melody, is a great example of Dvorak's natural ability to set melody. Dance 3 offers the playful, Dance 4 the pastoral, Dance 5 has a more rhapsodic feel, and Dance 6 has a classical dance flavor. The melodies are "catchy", yet masterfully written. Each dance is orchestrated differently, almost setting different scenes of folk life, diverse and rich. What is great about this work, is that the melodies do not become trite or tired, but instead become more inventive and engaging with each listening. Every individual track is literally a miniature masterpiece.
Loren Maazel and the Berlin Philharmonic never careen out of control as is so often the case (fast=musical in some recordings), nor does he revel in romanticized rubato. These are clean, well articulated performances at near perfect tempos and interpretations, all sections of the orchestra which need to be heard are perfectly balanced; every stroke of the timpani is heard with great clarity. Maazel makes great pains to make each dance engaging and diverse, all presented at a budget price on EMI for 79 minutes of music. Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra have a more "authenic" folk sounding recording, but for an essential classical rendition try and pick this one up; unfortunately it is discontinued on Amazon - try the EMI website or buy it used."
