"I thought for sure this one would suck. I spent my twenties in the Seattle area, and remember how any once great band that played at the Phoenix Underground was singing it's swan song, and usually in a painfully embarrassing way. So, when I saw that this album was recorded there, I was filled with woe. But, I downloaded it from iTunes (where you can get the whole thing sans videos for $10), and it turned out to be really good. Not as good as the live shows I saw SCM perform back in the day, mind you-nothing could ever top Roderick's crazy renditions of the Elephant Song, or the excitement of the first time I saw them play Shipwrecked. An SCM concert was always more than just sound anyway. Their level of crowd interaction and the set designs they put together would foreshadow Anisa's talents as an artist. But this is about as close as you're gonna get to that experience, given that they never recorded any concerts back in the 90's, unless you know somebody with some choice bootlegs. And it's a damn sight better than most of the over-popularized stuff the other Seattle bands were pumping out at the same time, even though SCM never got the same degree of popularity. That all just adds to the mystique, though, because if you know SCM, that means you were in on the big secret, the thing that people from outside of the area never managed to commodify. This stuff's as pure as it gets."
