Synopsis

Skillet's third release, Invincible, has the sort of momentum that pulls the listener's thoughts and emotions into it. Both the lyrics and music have a hard-hitting quality that plays off the other to create a no-nonsense production. Keeping in step with the electronic age, there is a heavy techno influence; buzzes and whirls often create what sounds like a musical Morse code. But, like a sledgehammer, the undulating drum loops, rolling bass lines, and chunky guitar patches drive this music forward. In addition to the intensity of the music, the lyrics pull no punches about the truths that they carry. Unfettered by compromise, straightforward messages announce the power and wonder of God's nature. As well, a believing response is presented in its most radical form. At times, the vocal inflections display an aggressive passion for Christ. Other songs revisit the pop euphoria of new-wave music. During the ballads, a more worshipful flavor emerges as lead singer John L. Cooper shares an intimate knowledge of God's love. It is not an easy task for music with this much energy to accurately convey the heart of the message it carries, but that is what Skillet has set out to do, and they show no sign of slowing down. --Israel Button

CD Reviews

Fantastic album from Skillet
Michael D. Ropp | 09/03/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Skillet is an amazing band that has completely re-worked their sound for each of their 8 cds which the exception of their newest one Awake which followed a very similar sound to Comatose. One reviewer called himself a hardcore Skillet fan and then said that this isn't their usual stuff, which both sound like very incorrect statements to me. A hardcore Skillet fan would realize that they don't have "usual" stuff but are a constantly evolving band. No, this does not sound like Comatose or Awake or Collide, but it was a perfect transition between Hey You, I love Your Soul and Alien Youth. Personally, even though I loved Collide and Comatose I'm really beginning to miss this sound from Skillet and I feel like they are losing a lot of the creativity that they displayed on all of their previous albums. The lyrics I feel are more maturely written than some of their newer songs, especially those on Awake. It is definitely a happier album, which doesn't make it better but it makes it very fun to listen to when you get tired of every other band (and newer Skillet) complaining about breakups and their fathers. The electronic keyboards mixed with the moderately heavy guitars allow the band to explore a lot of interesting and unique ground and after over eight years of owning this album, it has never gotten old for me. Very highly recommended as is almost anything Skillet has done. I think the band deserved way more recognition than they did at this stage in their career."
Awesome, awesome, awesome

"Skillet is the best! Buy their cd's, you won't be dissapointed ever. Seeing them perform live is even better. They are a Christian band, so they have some slow songs, but most of them rock. It's nice to hear good clean lyrics with the hard rock sound. Thanks skillet!"
