"To put it simply, this CD is yet another proof that the music of this charismatic composer is simply stunning. In the beginning I was quite reluctant to listen to the atonal works of the composer so I had just focused on the tonal ones. After listening repeatedly to his Piano Concerto n.1 I was convinced that there is something special in his music. This CD is a splendid proof that atonal music - as perceived and developed by Skalkottas - can be as breathtaking and warm as tonal music.
I started listening to the most accessible works of this Cd (concertino for trumpet, tango & fox-trot) then went on to the mesmerizing sonata concertante for bassoon and piano , and finally to the quartet and the charming concerto for two violins.
All in all, fantastic Cd. Skalkottas' unique way of expressing his thoughts will leave you wanting to explore his music even more. If in the beginning you can't understand the "direction" of each work, don't get discouraged. Repeated listening will more than reward you!"
