Synopsis

Product Description
Simon Apple's long awaited album, River To The Sea, was released in September 2004. The album was mixed by Grammy-winning producer/engineer, David Leonard (Paul McCartney, Rush, Tony Bennett, Prince, Barenaked Ladies, kd lang, etc). Guest artists appearing on the album: Legendary bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, John Lennon), guitarist Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult), saxophonist John Helliwell (Supertramp), cellist Hugh McDowell (Electric Light Orchestra), multiple Grammy winning bassist Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group), and trumpeter Dave Stahl (Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick, Jr.). Simon Apple is donating a portion of every sale of River To The Sea to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Musically, a cross between Peter Gabriel, Steely Dan, Genesis, Sting, Marillion, Bruce Hornsby, Dave Matthews, Pat Metheny Group, Supertramp, James Taylor, etc... Simon Apple is that tiny point where all of those artists seem to intersect one way or another!

CD Reviews

Major Labels. WHERE ARE YOU???

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is hard to categorize. It covers every genre from progressive "rock" to jazz to pop to country to Christian. But, it is one of those timeless jems of artistic music whose songs you will remember your entire life, both musically and lyrically. The music and lyrics (especially the lyrics) on this CD are THAT powerful.

"River to the Sea" is a landmark album for independent bands in the U.S. There are so many world-renowned guest artists (who pretty much volunteered their time to contribute) on this CD that you will have to go to[...]to see the entire list.

The first single from the CD, "Hold Me [Like a Lover]", made it into the Top Ten AC Charts in Dec. of 2005. What made this so remarkable is that Simon Apple is an "Indy Band", meaning that they have no "big buck" record company backing them. They had to shell out their own money to finance its release. What that means is, they didn't have the 6-figure money to "grease" the major market radio stations with to constantly play the song. What THAT means is that great music stands on its own merits.

Anyways, "River" is one of those little jems that you find that you listen to once, then wonder why you can't help but keep placing it in your CD player every time you hop in your car. It really is THAT good. The closest I can compare it to is Supertramp's "Crime of the Century" album of 1974. Excellent production. Sparkling vocals. Insightful lyrics. Timeless music.

The Bottom Line?

Content (lyrically) 5 Stars. They make you think without pushing ANY religious agenda, and have fun (and make fun) while doing so.

Content (production). 5 Stars (I wish I could go higher). I have never heard a CD put out by an "Indy band" that had the respect of so many legends in the music industry that they were willing to VOLUNTEER their time to either perform or work behind the scenes to help Simon Apple end up with a truly, first-class CD. The guest artists perform/produce/mix at an exemplary level.

Content (musically): 4.5 Stars. I have not heard such a unique quality blending of jazz, rock, country and progressive-rock on the same album as far back as I can remember. It really is hard to describe Simon Apple's music. Just not so sure about a couple of the "fillers in between".

FINAL ANALYSIS: A truly monumental CD from (in my opinion) the most underrated independent band in the United States today. And that is sad. Not only for Simon Apple, but equally for those who will never get the opportunity to hear their music, or, just as importantly,"hear" what they have to say.

"Hi There!

All I can say is I really love this CD, River to the Sea by Simon Apple. I can't stop listening to it and I'm constantly trying to get anyone I know to listen to it.

This CD will be greatly appreciated by fans of contemporary hitmakers like Switchfoot and even Steven Curtis Chapman. But it will also be enjoyed by anyone who loves classic bands like the Beatles, Genesis, Rush, Supertramp and Steely Dan.

The list of guest stars performing on the CD are very impressive, but what's really outstanding here is the strong musicianship and talented & diverse songwriting. The top-notch production values don't hurt either.

If you have to buy one CD this year, buy two or three of this one and share it around as gifts. It's really great! I'm 41 and even my 12 and 10 year old sons can't get enough of it.
