"The version of "Silent Night" that most learn in school is different from the melody created by Franz Gruber in 1818. This recording provides three different arrangements of "Stille Nacht" from various periods in the composer's life. Another of his carols, "Heiligste Nacht," is performed beautifully by Salzburg's Mozarteum Choir. Excerpts from two of Gruber's nearly 100 Masses are included and demonstrate the fact that his music ability was not limited to one song. The Austrian folk quality of the Mass arrangements is absolutely delightful and it's wonderful to hear them performed in Salzburg's churches and cathedral on Christmas morning. If you can't be there in person, this CD will give you an opportunity to dream about it."
