CD Reviews

Slabco sound gets even more tripped out
abraxxas | Brooklyn, NY United States | 10/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Team Slabco amazes yet again, and this time without even resorting to its proven formula of singing girls and hiphop beats! Well, let me amend that a bit - the beats are still there, all that's really been lost is the girls and the pop music. This double cd set compiles four 12"s, and we get:Disc 1 - Saints of Infinity: The first two tracks have a jazzy feel lent by the use of wicked standup bass grooves, but after that we embark on a journey into a land of haunted synths, dusted beats, and an overall pretty bleak look at the space age. Whereas other Slabco bands achieve their melancholy by being the happiest music on earth (a strange phenomenon achieved only by the absolute best pop music - the only examples I can cite are the Slabco bands, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and His Name is Alive), Sientific American goes straight for the source with somber synth lines and odd (but relevant) samples about the metaphysical "future," sorta. Clearly the stronger of the two discs.Disc 2 - Simulated D.I.Y.: This one also starts out more upbeat and straightforward, with more standup bass and at least one mean sitar groove ("Boost the Mid-Range"), but then comes pretty close to getting lost in the haze of space. Never really does though, and stays much more upbeat than disc 1 - I think that's why I don't quite like it as much; it just feels less interesting, more like old-hat.As mentioned earlier, this double cd has lost the pop element of Slabco... Even on the tracks where Sientific American try for it, they can't come close to their labelmates and end up sounding sort of limp. But that's OK, since, as also already noted, their strengths lie elsewhere, namely in creating a groove that feels like it's halfway to 2001... Excellent."
Getting sucked into your headphones

"this is my favourite album that came out in the last four years.
basically all i have to say about it is that you need to go out and purchase the finest pair of headphones you can get your hands on, then fall asleep to disc 1 when you are intoxicated. saints of infinity has the perfect slow down for that hard night of blunts and white russians. if make it to track four, you will most likely be spiraled into a beautiful eyelid movie as your muscles drip off your bones to the sound of that slowing down string loop. the rest of the album provides a lucid backdrop that transitions into the music your brain makes up in dreams. best friggin' sleep you'll ever get."
