Synopsis

Amazon.com
This exuberant album-length debut (following a pair of EPs) showcases a young Los Angeles band that has roots in alt-country and an ear toward rock radio. Frontman Aaron Beavers frequently sounds like Counting Crows' Adam Duritz in his tremulous sincerity, while his material acknowledges the formative influence of Tom Petty (on "Petty Song") and channels some of the spirit of the early Eagles (on "So Happy"). Performances that range from the buoyant innocence of "Red Eyes" to the raw, garage-band urgency of "I Got You (Part 3)" support the band's reputation as a live powerhouse, with the somber balladry of the title track and the meditation on mortality in "Down" showing a more reflective side. As an ode to last call, "2 a.m." brings the album to a fitting, bar-band close. --Don McLeese

"I just heard this CD and I must say I am BLOWN away!! Saw these guys with Los Lonely Boys and I was prayin they would sound as good on record and I must say I am pleasantly suprised. Best live band I've seen in a while and this is the record of the year!!! YEEEE HAAAAAW!!!!!"

"Not completely sure why 'ole boy was bashing Shurman in that other review - but I have a little bit of a different take on them. I wouldn't necessarily compare him to the artists he mentioned, especially his bizzarre comparison to Ryan Adams, but I would put them more on the lines of some older Great Divide stuff before they changed lead singers.

Odds are I wouldn't have bought this CD based on reviews, though. I saw them live in OKC last weekend and bought their disk there after hanging out with a couple guys from the band for a while. I then drove from OKC to Dallas to OKC to Houston the next couple days and listened to it for a huge portion of the time.

My favorite songs were probably 'I Got You' and 'Jubilee', but everything kept my foot tapping and kept me entertained - which is necessary when trekking back and forth across Texas and Oklahoma.

Good stuff... good stuff. Some pretty good guys, too."

"I saw Shurman open for Ted Nugent at the Fillmore and they totally rocked the house. I met the guys after the show and they were so nice and down to earth. They really just love to play. Show some love to theses guys, they play their hearts out and this CD is well worth the money!"
