Synopsis

Album Description
"Rejects the motifs that have congealed into cliché, and comes up with a music where intuitive rhythm and analytical intellect jostle each other and become one... ludicrously superb." - VILLAGE VOICE Shot X Shot is an improvisational acoustic quartet performing original compositions steeped in jazz tradition, but with experimental sensibilities. Formed in 2003 while the members were students at Philadelphia's University of the Arts, Shot X Shot has quickly established itself as a groundbreaking band in one of jazz's most important cities. Having been exposed to (and performed) all sorts of eclectic music, the group infuses its compositions with diverse, modern influences and a daring spirit. With Dan Scofield and Bryan Rogers on dueling saxophones, ballasted by drummer Dan Capecchi and bassist Matt Engle, the band's multidimensional sound relies on each musician's unique contribution. Both Scofield and Engle are key members of African percussion-infused jazz group Sonic Liberation Front, whose 2004 High Two album Ashé A Go-Go was highly praised by the Village Voice, Jazz Times and The Wire. Scofield is also a member of noise-improv band Wolf Vs. and performs, alongside Rogers, in Bobby Zankel's large ensemble. Capecchi, a recent transplant from Minnesota, is a former member of indie rock band Triangle and folk ensemble Jackaroo.

CD Reviews

A fine debut

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is the debut of a Philadelphia quartet--hard to classify this one but if you thought of a halfway point between a Konitz/Marsh album and Zorn/Berne's _Spy Vs Spy_ you wouldn't be too far off. I like the strangeness and haunting quality--call it vulnerability--of the music, which is in part due to the rather soggy church acoustic (the bassist is nearly buried in all the echo, though the horns sound great) which gives it a smeary, slo-mo, ambient feeling. The only player on the disc that was previously familiar to me was altoist Dan Scofield, who's on many other High Two releases such as _Ashe a Go-Go_; the rest of the band is tenor saxophonist Bryan Rogers, bassist Matt Engle and drummer Dan Capecchi. The echoey sound (and rather hissy recording) will bother some listeners, but the music itself is some of the freshest I've heard from the current crop of young jazz musicians--the eerie "Bee Assassins" and "Volzalisle" are especially strong performances."
