CD Reviews

The very best recording of this music
Long Beach Music Lover | Long Beach, CA United States | 04/13/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the benchmark recording of these monuments of 20th Century piano repertoire.

Nikolayeve, a lifelong friend of the composer, made these recordings in Seldon Hall, Hartfordshire, the year before her tragic death in San Francisco.

'The affectionate warmth, humour and vitality of her playing, the stunning virtuosity ... make this CD a winner' (CDReview) 'L'intériorité et la richesse de la lumière blafarde sont magnifiquement rendues' (Répertoire, France) 'Never less than magnificent' (San Francisco Examiner).

"Quote from Hyperion's site: "Her long working association with Shostakovich, and her great understanding of all aspects of his music, made her one of the leading sources of contemporary knowledge about that great composer. It was Nikolayeva for whom Shostakovich wrote his 24 Preludes and Fugues, inspired by hearing her Bach-playing at the 1950 Bach bicentenary Competition in Leipzig (he was on the jury), and it was she who premiered them in Leningrad in 1952."

All her discs recorded for Hyperion are jewels and this one is special. Highly recommended!
