CD Reviews

Magnificent!

"To appreciate the astounding music of Shostakovich

one needs competent conductors and performers, and

the recording must be excellent--Maestro Kreizberg, the RNO

and Pentatone did a highly commendable job on these two great

symphonies.

Recommended."
Excellent modern version

"While there are many recordings of Shostakovich's 5th symphony available, there are very few good ones recorded recently. Old legends such as Bernstein-NYPO have to be heard to be believed, however the tempi are so different than the scored music that other editions should be considered. The Mazel-Cleveland version has an excellent new SACD transfer available. However it takes sort of a middle ground approach between Bernstein and the actual scoring. A version by Chicago is unfortunately only available as an MP3 download and the first three movements are spectacular. No other recording continues to climax and grow as the Chicago recording, but the Finale is subpar. This new recording by Kreizberg-RNO is very good. I would not go so far as to say that it is definitive, but it justifies consideration. The RNO play very well and the recorded sound is spectacular. I have not listened to many versions of Shostakovich's 9th symphony, but this version is very enjoyable. If you love your current recording, by all means skip this one, but if you are still searching, as I have been, consider this version."
