"I am a definite fan of Dimitri Shostakovich but I prefer his more main stream pieces to his more modern sounding pieces. The Limpid stream falls more in the main stream catagory. This piece is very melodious and catchy. You can tell it is still a very modern score but for Shostakovich it is mainstream. Each piece of the first act bubbles and culminates in a very grand waltz (with traces of his jazz waltz). Than act 2 starts out even more sprightly than act 1 but starts to slow down. And finally the whole piece ends in a very deep, soft , but grand finale.
The ballet's story is about soviet russian engineers coming to Cuba to build a damn. Hardly a plot seeming worthy of such music as this but as we don't have to watch these engineers build the dam it hardly matters.
This ballet is a must for any lover of ballet. The music is highly addictive and beautiful. I couldn't stop listening to it for at least a month and even now I'm not tired of it. It just gets visited a little less."
