Album DescriptionRaphael Wallfisch enjoys a worldwide career playing with many major orchestras, and recently became noted as the world?s most-recorded cellist. Wallfisch studied with the great Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky in California. Raphael Wallfisch was born in London in 1953 to a family of distinguished musicians. At an early age, he was inspired by hearing Zara Nelsova play the cello, and made that instrument his life?s work. Wallfisch?s extensive discography includes works by Romantic and Modern composers, including a wide range of British cello concertos. Many of Britain?s leading composers have written works for him, including Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, James MacMillan, John Tavener, and more. Pianist John York commenced his concert career in 1973 after being awarded the International Debussy Prize in Paris. He has performed with the London Philharmonic and London Mozart Players, and is a frequent chamber music partner with Raphael Wallfisch. Martyn Brabbins is one of Britain?s leading and most versatile conducting talents and interpreters of contemporary music. This double album, containing over two hours of music, is the only integral edition of Shostakovich cello works available, and is being issued in commemoration of the centenary of the composer?s birth on September 25, 1906.
