Debuting at a time when so many bands are confessing their love for those who came before (Hives = Iggy, Interpol = Joy Division), Shesus runs the risk of being lumped into a crop of Pacific Northwest girl-punk bands spearheaded by Sleater-Kinney. While the band as a whole whips up a vicious, punk-rock fervor like those bands, and vocalist Heather Newkirk has the urgency and classic punk yelp of, say, Kathleen Hanna, Shesus blows the roof off the joint with a dirtier, sweatier, beer-induced, garage-flavored sensibility that perhaps is due to the humidity and musk of Dayton, Ohio. The music is sloppier, more reckless, and echoes with what sounds like old Fender guitars and tube amps dosed in reverb. The snotty see-saw of "Holidazed," the rubbery guitar buzz on "The More You Laugh," and the ?60s punk inspired "Take It" will get you up off the couch and prepare you for the absolutely rockin? anthem "B-Side Radio" and the ripping "Here Comes Nothing." These 15 tracks are guaranteed to knock the wind out of you. --Lorry Fleming

CD Reviews

Shesus Loves Me
Tex Clark | Columbus, OH United States | 04/22/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Heather Newkirk, the front of this hard-driving-rock-out-pop-girl thang, is the best lead singer to hit the scene since Joan Jett. And although a listener to the CD does not get the benefit of her magnetic and all-rebel-rock live wire delivery, it shines through on the recordings. This CD is destined to be my summer soundtrack for 2003, like Slanted and Enchanted was back in 92. Like the Team Dresch record in 93, like the Breeders record was in 95, like Versus was in 97, and like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs all this year. A little garagey, no insipid songwriting, with stops and starts, big beats, and tone-driven guitar riffs. all music that will make you get speeding tickets if you listen to it in your car."
Great record...great live band

"A friend of mine bought the album and brought it over so we could listen to it. We were both blown away. We couldn't stop listening to it( still can't). we were pleasently surprised to see they were playing in D.C. the next week. They were awesome live as well. they are like bizarro breeders, for lack of a better term. I highly suggest the album and if you can catch them live....please do."
