Somewhat unfocused

"Sex Mob played a show in Switzerland in 2006 opening up for Medeski Martin & Wood. John Medeski sat in for the set, it was recorded, and released in 2009. Sex Mob's sound is that of blearly, slurred jazz. Sometimes they play pop or film songs, in addition to the usual jazz standards and originals. Medeski's contribution isn't mixed too prominently, but he certainly adds to the songs. I like Sex Mob when they play the song and the solos, but sometimes they get unfocused and indulgent. Their whole concept is indulgent, so I may be asking them to walk a fine line.
The CD is arranged into suites, and broken down into 16 tracks. The section from "Black and Tan Fantasy" through "Down On The Farm" is pretty good. Then it's a bunch of noodling until "Darling Nikki" and "Odd Job" bring things around.
If you don't have any Sex Mob discs, I recommend starting with Solid Sender rather than this one.
