"A fine collection of Gainsbourg songs recorded by female singers in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Gainsbourg wrote as much, if not more, for others as he did for himself, so any single disc collection is only going to present a very narrow part of the whole picture. Some of the inclusions are redundant - surely even most casual Gainsbourg fans will own the Birkin, Deneuve and Charlotte tracks (the latter two duets with the man himself) and even the Karina (from the now widely-available "Anna" soundtrack).Minor grumbles aside, it's an eclectic and very listenable set, veering from classic French pop sounds to country to synth-pop to slick rock, the consistency guaranteed by the brilliant songwriter they share. The Lemaire, Jeanmaire, and D'Asta are interesting takes on familiar Gainsbourg classics. Mireille Darc's "Helicoptere" is a swirling psychadelic pop masterpiece, Isabelle Adjani's "Pull Marine" is a quite excellent, breathless track in the tradition of Jane Birkin's work with Gainsbourg. And what can one say about Francoise Hardy's "Comment Te Dire Adieu?" and France Gall's "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son", stellar pop confections that burst with classic sixties touches yet remain timeless and undated. Pure pop adrenalin rushes."
