CD Reviews

Serge est encore super cool!

"gainsbourg was rocking before jim morrison dropped his first shroom. "je t'aime, moi non plus" became the anthem for a whole generation of french youth and firmly established serge gainbourg's reputation in europe and abroad as the quitessential french womanizer. gainsbourg was trained classically, but switched to playing vaudeville gigs as a teenager to support himself. both influences are in evidence in this album -- robust pop anthems, with smooth melodic undertones. put this cd on, call up that special someone -- and get ready for some amour!"
Decent, but nothing special

"This is one of those Gainsbourg CDs that you should only get if you have already picked up his best stuff and now feel that you need to have everything the man ever released. Not that this soundtrack is bad, it's just not particularly interesting either, perhaps because it is entirely instrumental. The Johnny-Jane ballad was included in Serge's cinema box set so that's nothing new, but you get an extended version at the end which goes for about five minutes. It has some extra instrumentation but it's all a bit repetitive to be honest. There is an instrumental version of the famous Je T'aime.... song and a couple of other pretty boring versions of the song which aren't all that different (and they are all in a row, making it even more boring). Then there are a couple of throwaway country-western style tracks which are very short and a couple of slightly longer rock instrumentals. These two tracks actually save the soundtrack from being a waste of time. They are predictable, blues based traditional rock instrumentals but they feature some cool guitar and are worthwhile, if for no other reason than you get to hear Serge really rock out. All in all, this suffers from having no vocals and being too repetitive, but it's still a soundtrack that Gainsbourg fans will want to have."
