Mozart was the Serenade and Divertimento king of the 18th century. This doesn't mean he was the only guy writing them, merely that he was one of the few writing them whose music is still worth listening to. As the titles imply, this is music to charm, relax, and most of all, to fill up some time. The serenades are all multi-movement works that often incorporate elements of the concerto, along with several dances. Divertimenti, on the other hand, tend to have a more flexible scoring, often being written for winds alone. It's a constant source of amazement that Mozart could make this sort of 18th century Muzak so consistently entertaining, and this inexpensive box is a great way to acquire a big chunk of music at a very reasonable price. --David Hurwitz
