An impressive start, but later recordings much better

"Check out 2nd Grand COnstitution or Book M. I love what Secret Chiefs 3 is doing in philosophy, but this album is very under-realized and not as sharp as their later efforts."
And now for something completely different.....

"It really pisses me off how we are not exposed to stuff like this on the radio and on T.V. I mean, its fun to look for "secret" music, but why does the world have to stupify people with all the crap in the spotlight? This album's originality and brilliance is abundantly clear - I bought it a few days ago being a hardcore Mike Patton and company fan, and have already fallen in love with it. I'll be purchasing the other two albums within a couple of days - I've played this for a bunch of ignorant, supposed music lovers, and they have all been blown away by it, asking uninformed questions like "Where did you get this stuff?" and "Wait, what is this stuff again? Is this Atmosphere?" Why don't people look for things rather than just take what comes to them? Who the hell knows. You know what else pisses me off though (just let me pretend you care) - is when people come on to these review forums and tell you to buy some other album by a completely different and irrelevant artist, saying something like "Secret Chiefs 3 lacks soul" oooooh - like you know what the hell soul is. There's more than enough soul in Spruance, Dunn and Heifitz to last forever. They just don't take everything as seriously as some of the ... retentive groups that get more money than they deserve. Which is good. Cause life isn't all that serious."
If You're Tired of Formulaic Commercial Garbage . . .

"If you're tired of "fleshed-out . . . musical compositions" and brain-killing pop, then you must buy this album. Don't expect to walk away from this recording with a rhythmic bounce to your step or some cliched hook circling your head, expect to be inspired and confused. There is no one, repeat no one who can arrange such beautiful and at the same time ugly tracks. Only the foolish could mistake this music for slop rather than expertise and genius. If you'd like to hear some slop, then buy a Red Hot Chili Peppers' album. If you's like to hear a new sound (a truly new sound that is), get a breath of fresh air, then get this one. It's a keeper."
Indulgent mess

"As with any avant-garde creative work, this one has created a coterie of fans who say: "If you don't get it, then there's something wrong with you, because to someone who has reached my higher level of perception it's obviously brilliant." Don't be bullied. Just because people can listen to something dozens of times, until the point that they've memorized the string of notes the way some kid memorizes the string of digits that make up pi, doesn't make it good; it just makes it familiar to them. But there's not much here worth investing so much time to internalize. Lots of noises. Lots of undeveloped ideas. (Notice how the positive reviews are stuck defining the supposed virtues of this CD according to what it isn't.) Experimental music is great but this experiment failed, except insofar as it helped lay the groundwork for the compelling Secret Chiefs 3 recordings that followed."
Blowing your mind again

"Trey Spruance has done it again, when this album came out in 1996 it rocked. Now the addition of new tracks has made it a more powerful album, this is a very good choice for people who's trying to find new ways of music listening. I recommend this one a lot. PS: White as They Come is still the very best track on this album."
