CD Reviews

Second Band Only To The Beatles? "Search" No Further...
David J. Coyle | Chillicothe, OH USA | 10/20/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"You will never find a single-disc collection of this fab, gear Merseybeat band, second only to the Beatles as the best band to come out of Liverpool in the early '60s. The "Definitive Collection" gives you the most bang for the buck, with the bonus that you are also getting the first Searchers album, "Meet The Searchers" in the same price. From the 12-string folk rock sound of "Needles And Pins" and "When You Walk In The Room" to the near-psychedelia of "Popcorn Double Feature" and "Secondhand Dealer," the Searchers recordings were top-rate. They were brilliant purveyors of other writers/artists' material, a quality that sometimes gets the Searchers short shrift from British Invasion experts. But listen to their versions of the Drifters' "I Don't Want To Go On Without You," the Jagger/Richards song "Take It Or Leave It" or the aforementioned Jackie DeShannon songs, and notice how they make these songs their own. Case in point: how many times do you hear the original Clovers version of "Love Potion No. 9" on the radio nowadays? The Searchers also did quite well on their own in the songwriting department, as the hopeful "Someday We're Gonna Love Again" and the melancholy "He's Got No Love" testify. And if you think the Searchers only did slow, pretty love songs, check out "Farmer John," "Alright," or "Tricky Dicky."The set only falls short in a couple places, namely with a limp version of "Twist And Shout" that closes out the bonus disc. And missing is their wild take on the Coasters' "Ain't That Just Like Me," that like the excellent "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" (included here) puts the Hollies' competing version to shame. You can't go wrong buying this disc if you only know the Searchers' hits and want a value-conscious but comprehensive set, especially at [this] price. If you find yourself "searching" for more, the next step would be the two-disc "Pye Anthology" or the older but even more complete "30th Anniversary Collection" which includes rarities not available elsewhere."
