CD Reviews

Lullabies Soothe Bloodshot Eyes
Anne A. Tenaglia | East Goshen, PA United States | 02/27/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you were looking for an extension of a Great Big Sea album, look for their new release GBS X later in the year, just don't look here at Lullabies for Bloodshot Eyes. This is a stripped down, singer/songwriter solo CD from the Shantyman himself. The album is worth it for the collection of lyrics alone; the music, compelling - a thinking man's album. Mr. McCann takes your arm and leads you on a tour through some of his tortured sleepless nights. The funny thing about it is that you find yourself actually looking forward to each next product of his sleepless, bloodshot eyes. "...Free from fear and furrowed brow, awake at break of day." Some are sobering (take that both ways), some sorrowful, some soothing, but all are heartfelt. The eyes may be bloodshot from lack of sleep, but the promise of a new day remains. You may just find Peace Among the Bones or Lazy Lover racing around your head for days. A good beginning for what I hope will be many solo albums to come."
Excellent initial solo effort from GBS member

"To say that I was excited about a solo disc from Sean McCann of Great Big Sea would be an understatement. I love the band and am happy to support them in their endeavors. Although the disc goes by too quickly, every minute of it is enjoyable. The liner notes are hysterical as I would expect from Mr. Sarcasm himself so check them out."

"I cannot be entirely objective because I do not believe Sean McCann can do a BAD album. He is immensely talented and will only prove this more with time and with work away (as well as with) Great Big Sea.

His vocals have an unusual timbre; they are not classically male, bass, tenor, or any other designation; there is a reedy and rough edge on many of his vocals, but largely that is intentional and controlled. (Listen to "ENGLAND" on the FORTUNE'S FAVOUR GBS album if there is any question about intent or control.)

His sensitivity and introspection and intelligence are evident in as many songs as are his abilities in the bawdy, rowdy, and irreverent ones.

Overall a very good album and representative of Sean's great talent and exciting potential. Looking forward to more from him, solo as well as a GBS member.

His sons (Thing One and Thing Two) are quite fortunate with their parental choices.
