If you have not heard these pieces, you should. A few have piano but most are just cello. Solo cello. Gems, the lot! Pieces range from 2 to 10 minutes and captivate and sustain your attention.
Difficult to single out pieces for praise, but Lacrimosa (from the "Requiem for cello alone") and Threnody are wonderful. Check them all out and you won't be disappointed.
Sculthorpe always bring Shostakovich to my mind, despite very different musics. This is because they have written great major works but when you visit their string quartets and smaller pieces for strings, including solo cello, they have both produced an opus of, I'll say it again, exquisite gems!
