Synopsis
Album Description BadMeaningGood gives Hip Hop's freest spirits the chance to refashion the story of hip hop in their own personal way, redefining what the genre means by showcasing the music that they feel best sums up what it's all about. This time out, BMG hands the controls to a trio. Tony Vegas, Plus One and Prime Cuts are better known as the Scratch Perverts, and between them the three London-based battle DJs have racked up more UK and world titles than any of them can care to remember. Yet all three men share a belief that hip hop is about more than proving your mettle in competition, which is why their mix is chock full of heavyweight tunes and their scratch mastery is held potently in reserve. "We tried not to go too skills-heavy," Vegas explains. "When you're making something for people to listen to it's more important to let the records breathe. Hip hop came from many, many different social musical backgrounds. And I think if people begin to understand that, then hopefully they can start digging in the crates for themselves and going back and finding out a little bit more about music." What the Perverts define as Hip Hop is a long way off what people might expect. "Hip Hop is a celebration of all kinds of music just by its very nature," explains Prime Cuts. "So it follows that our album will be very much a Hip Hop album in the broadest sense of the term. We've tried to do what we see Hip Hop as being - a celebration of all music, taking on board everything that inspires us and channeling it into our tracks." Similar CDs |
CD ReviewsTasty ear candy Modern Fix | United States | 09/30/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I'm always down with a good mix CD. The good ones usually put you on to the new stuff floating around or are just a good collection of tunes from the past. These World Champion DJ's from the UK, lay a set that will surely get MAD rotation on your player if you are a fan of Hip-Hop, Breaks, Reggae, and even some Drum n' Bass. Any mix featuring The Specials, Schooly D, Supercat, Gangstarr and DJ Shadow is well worth a listen. While not all of the joints are seamlessly blended, the tracks play for more of their original duration so we get more than the mixed CD average, 24 bars of these classic tunes. Other than skipping through the Drum n' Bass tunes, I have played this disc dozens of times already. Big up to Scratch (...)on some tasty ear candy."
