CD Reviews

Best Hamilton Ever !!!!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Scott Hamilton is simply amazing. He just goes on and on , year
after year, producing one superb album after another. He's been
recording for Concord for over 25 years now, and I defy anyone to name a jazz artist with a more consistent output during that
time period. A strong statement ?? I really don't think so , and
this new CD simply backs it up . Tasteful and swinging both in
the choice of material and the incredible British trio which backs him up, Scott has definitely hit a new peak. Tunes like
"The Squirrel" (which is a great opener) feature his unmistakable tone and wealth of ideas, which seem to flow endlessly. Scott always includes a few ballads in every set,
and this time he features a gorgeous "When I Fall In Love" and
the surprising "When You Wish Upon A Star". "Easter Parade" is
given a fresh new look, and the bass player Dave Green is fea-
tured with Scott on his original "Licks". The best is saved for last, however, in a way up-tempo reading of Al Cohn's old tune,
"The Goof and I". This burns furiously from start to finish, and includes a not-to-be-believed Hamilton solo which , for seven blistering choruses, must have lifted the entire band about a foot off the ground. I don't think there are many tenor
players out there who can match the intense swinging, lifting feel which Scott got on this solo. Definitely one for the ages, and one which hopefully won't be ignored come Grammy time. In
short, the album is a classic. If you think you've heard great
tenor playing, hear this. Now."
