CD ReviewsFinally available once more Dan Bergevin | CapitalizedLiving.com | 05/30/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "When I lived in San Diego I found that Scorn was one of those few musicians that I always enjoyed and could always find in the used bargain bin for less than $3. I think the only Scorn album I ever paid full price for was Plan B, and that's because I couldn't find it in any stores.
Evanescence was one of those super-cheap albums that surprised the hell out of me. It's evil zombie dub with spooky voices, loops, sinister ambience, and heavy beats. It's not as funky as Colossus, which is what you'd get if you resurrected James Brown, force-fed him Goth culture and taught him how to use a synth. But it's still funky. While I've never felt that Evanescence represented Scorn's best work, I certainly can appreciate its uniqueness in comparison to everything else Mick Harris has done, and can definitely see why it would appeal to a larger audience. Now that this album is back in print, and paired with the sub-par Ellipsis (it's okay, just not terribly interesting), it's time for anyone who was curious about this album to get out and buy it. It will never be as good on CD as it is on vinyl (played at 72rpm, it's actually kid-friendly). But that's a minor complaint." |
