Of the four opera featured on this disc, only the Op. 94 Romances were written by Schumann specifically for oboe and piano. The others were for violin and piano--with suggestions that other instruments (viz. clarinet, viola, or cello) could be substituted: this was in an effort to further disseminate his music by increased sales.
All the pieces are nice and quintessential Schumann in his Klavierstücke/Fantasiestücke vein: very proto-Brahmsian. The use of the plangent oboe here lends an affecting melancholy tone.
The soloists are great--especially pianist Jenö Jandó who is superb with everything he touches: indeed, he has become one of my favourite musicians.
