Amazon.comAnton Kuerti is a Canadian pianist with an international reputation and many recordings. These revivals from late '70s analog tapes show him as a rather reserved Schumann player. His Carnaval and Humoreske are both very well behaved, avoiding unseemly outbursts and keeping dynamics and emotions within a relatively limited range. So these performances seem to offer an inadequate response to the wildness of the music. However, Kuerti's playing of the late Theme and Variations, which he says is Schumann's last complete work, is touching enough so that some might want the disc for it alone. --Leslie Gerber
