"Until I heard this set of Schubert string quartets, the Schubert String Quintet in C major, D. 956, op. posth. 163, was my favorite piece of chamber music.
But this recording includes two quartets --D87 op. 125 number 1 in E flat major, and String Quartet D804 opus 29, number 1--are also pieces of genius, and their performance by the Borodin String Quartet, masterful. The first is a 25-minute piece. The second, 33 minutes and change.
I'm also taken with the included Quartettsatz (Quartet Movement) D703 in C minor, which is just over nine minutes long.
I'm also very pleased that I found this CD at quite a reasonable price, roughly $5, at a great little retail outlet I know. But even at higher price would be worth it.
The recording is golden."
