Naxos's bargain-priced, first volume of Johannes Schenck's The Nymphs of the Rhine gave us an introduction to this illusive baroque composer's musical talents. This disc finishes the Nymphs cycle, with equally stunning results. These 12 sonatas for two violas da Gamba are some of the most original and esoteric works you could ever ask for--incredibly brief, but haunting duet suites filled with gorgeous lyricism and counterpoint, and bearing the influence of German, Italian, and French composing techniques. Schenck (1660-c. 1712) may have been a Dutch court composer, but it sounds as though he heard his share of Marais; just like the better-known French composer, he showcases the singing quality and tonal range of the da Gamba with incredible effectiveness. Susie Napper and Margaret Little, members of Les Voix Humaines, deliver stirring performances on these last six sonatas. This is soulful, goose-bump inducing music and a must-have for adventurous baroque lovers. --Jason Verlinde

CD Reviews

Outstanding period-instrument performance at a great price

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Naxos has done it again--brought us a beautifully recorded performance of unjustly neglected early music performed with good taste and finesse on period instruments. Schenk is one of those rare-fruits who has lingered for too long in the shadow of his more famous contemporaries. His duos for the viola da gamba are full of all sorts of unexpected twists and turns, and, surprisingly, they don't appear to have fallen prey to the rigid rules of form inflicted on the sonata by Corelli, retaining instead the dark, brooding quality of an earlier time and mixing it with the raw and latent energy found in the best music of the late seventeenth century. I had not heard of the performers here before I bought this CD, but I would put them on a level with the best gamba players today, as their interpretations are fresh and buoyant and entirely appropriate to the mysterious nature of this music."
