Two old college chums and ex band mates from the 60's NY folk scene - mandolin maestro David Grisman and rock and roll hall of famer - John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful reunite for one sweet duo recording of traditional folk and blues songs, tasteful instrumentals, and Sebastian originals. This acoustic project is a rare treat produced by two exceptional artists whose careers have spanned more than 40 years and have unquestionably made an indelible mark in musical history.
"Before there was a Lovin' Spoonful. Before anyone ever heard of "dawg" music. Way back in 1964, John Sebastian and David Grisman were part of the Even Dozen Jug Band (along with Maria Muldaur and Stefan Grossman). Now, more than forty years later, the duo team up again on this collection of familiar and original tunes.
Highlights include a pair of Mississippi John Hurt songs--"I'm Satisfied" and "Coffee Blues"--that perfectly suit the pairing of Sebastian's acoustic guitar and Grisman's mandolin. Equally impressive is how their instrumental "voices" blend on the Grisman original "EMD." Grisman's mandolin also adds a haunting quality to the Spoonful track "It's Not Time Now." Even the lazy shuffle of the Everly Brothers' classic "Walk Right Back" has an aw-shucks charm. However, there are a couple of times where the laid back approach borders on coma-inducing territory--especially the dirge-like pace of "Deep Purple" and "Coconut Grove." But overall, it's great to hear these two "old-timers" pick and sing. If you're a fan of either artist, you'll find much to enjoy here. RECOMMENDED"
Two well traveled and musicians sit back and just play.

This CD features John Sebastian, David Grisman in the most natural of settings. The songs, all classics in their own right, were basically recorded live with just a couple of microphones. The playing is engaging and can suck you in instantly. The vocals sound a little road worn. They have a charming older gentleman sitting on a porch sound. Not that the vocals are bad it is just next to such vibrant playing they sound a little old. John Sebastian and David Grisman do their best singing with their instruments.
For me this CD is all about the instrumentals. The playing is full of taste, craftsmanship and whimsy. In this case the picture on the CD cover really reflects what the CD will sound like. I particularly enjoyed the sprinkeling of blues tunes mixed throughout the CD. And Pssst... Don't tell anyone but there is a cool little version of John Sebastian's "Daydream" hidden in the last track starting at 3:04

"Wow, what a wonderful abum! The Lovin' Spoonful always kept that easy, happy beat going as John Sebastian does here. Add the virtuosity of David Grisman and you have the ultimate feel-good music. I hadn't heard several of these tunes in many years and it was fun cruising down memory lane with the car windows open and funny looks coming from other drivers. (That didn't keep the silly grin off my face.) If you like this kind of music, and you wouldn't be here if you didn't, buy this one right now!"

"Another Acoustic Gem from Acoustic Disc.
I was amazed at the overal sound for a duet recording.
Sebastian's fingerstyle guitar with Grisman's mandolin produce an incredibly rich sound. Some great instrumentals too.
Sebastian's voice may have aged but still has great 'character"."

I just got this CD in the mail yesterday and I have not taken it off of my CD player yet. Playing this makes me feel like John Sebastian and David Grisman are in my living room jamming and having a good time- Much in the tradition of "Pizza Tapes" with Jerry Garcia. John Sebastian's guitar playing is AMAZING and incredible when paired up with David Grisman's Mandolin. I highly recommend this for anyone that wants music that will make them feel good. Another wonderful release by David Grisman."
