CD Reviews

Great Christmastime album

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Santa Baby is a great album put out by Starbucks in 2006; and it's a shame that it's already out of print. There are many great talents performing on this CD; and if you can get yourself a copy you're bound to enjoy this!

Tony Bennett sings "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" flawlessly; the strings and flutes enhance this number greatly. Tony delivers this ballad with great sensitivity and a classy style I rarely enjoy. Listen also for Elvis singing "Here Come Santa Claus" with a great backup chorus--The Jordannaires, perhaps? Elvis hits every note just right; and his strong voice makes for a particularly beautiful rendition of "Here Comes Santa Claus."

Pink Martini, a more modern day group, does an awesome job with "Little Drummer Boy;" and Nat King Cole sings "L-O-V-E" as well as he ever could sing this classic song. The percussion, piano and strings add to the natural beauty of "L-O-V-E." I predict that you will enjoy "L-O-V-E" very, very much--and how's about that horn solo?

Eartha Kitt then comes in from the steamier side of the street as she sings her famous rendition of "Santa Baby." Eartha makes this number all her own with her excellent diction, heart and soul. Awesome brass and percussion on "Santa Baby," too! Listen also for Dean Martin to croon his very beat with his version of "The Christmas Blues;" and the great Ella Fitzgerald sounds great on "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer." Ella swings brightly for "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer;" and you will enjoy this number very much.

Aimee Mann's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" stuns me with its beauty; her voice is rich and vibrant on this number which gets a country type arrangement. Sonya Kitchell performs "White Christmas" flawlessly, too.

All good things must come to an end; and the CD track set closes with Peggy Lee singing the nostalgic and rather moving "I'll Be Seeing You." The piano enhances "I'll Be Seeing You" and Peggy never sounded better!

The CD artwork is very impressive; and we get the song credits, too. They also include brief stories about the artist singing each song on this album.

I highly recommend this fine album for anyone who enjoys five star quality Christmastime music as well as the wonderful artists on this CD. I hope it comes back in print very soon!
