Synopsis

Sandra Bernhard's unclassifiable genius is on full display on this recording from her live performance at New York's off-off-Broadway Westbeth Theater. Not really a comedy album, this disc is an amalgam of song, cabaret, and cutthroat comedy. Her jokes do the usual job of skewering the vanity of celebrities ("Courtney, baby, what plastic surgeon is going to go in there and fix all the scars in your heart?"), analyzing modern life ("Caller ID! For the ultimate in passive-aggressive behavior!"), and observing the culture ("My favorite Spice Girl? The mother: Old Spice"). But it's Bernhard's ability to go from a tender story about an undemonstrative girlfriend to a scathing diatribe on designer perfume that makes her such an unpredictable, and unforgettable, comic artist. --Lois Maffeo

CD Reviews

I cried from laughter

"The reason I bought this cd is simple. My friend told me about her comedy show on HBO that he caught one night. He found it hilarious. He told me the piece where Sandra rags on Mariah Carey "and her crazy ass." Just on his rendition alone, I was sold. This cd is incredible. I have never laughed so hard in the car. I almost sideswiped a chevy when she was doing her impersonation of an Arab woman asking Sandra if she wanted to borrow her brush in her "fabulous trip to morocco." I was also taken aback by her suprisingly stirring voice. who knew such a fiery ball of sarcastic wit could belt out tunes like she did here. i always figured we were given one basic talent...sandra was given several. by the way, no one here is left unscathed. she touches on all the novelties of pop culture and bashes each of them to a pulp. she comes of sassy, brash, intelligent, and, most importantly, aware of the joke of a world we sometimes live in. lucky for us, she lets us in on the punchline we often miss. buy this cd, you will not regret it."
Outrageous, unforgettable fun

"Sandra's audio recording of her extremely successful Broadway show by the same name is markedly original set against comedy recordings by other artists of the 1990s. "I'm Still Here Damn It!", with its richness of references and deadpan subtleties, fairly demands multiple playings, and ones which Berhard's fans will be only too delighted to withstand.Avid Sandra-watchers have observed the evolution of her theatrical persona from the hilariously degraded character she played in the Scorcese film "The King of Comedy" to her more recent, comparatively contented and confident incarnation. Naturally, Sandra continues to poke fun at New Age sophistries, yet her material reflects a new maturity and even moments of pure joy, as captured in her lovely song "God is Good", prompted by a recent, transformative visit to Morocco.Always a master of ironic detachment from modern culture, which permits her familiar depraved juxtapositions of high- and low-brow material, Sandra asserts perhaps most strongly yet her very real avant-gardism. Staying a few steps ahead of the cynicism produced by the late 1990s decline of the supermodel, and of the designer grief prompted by the murder of Gianni Versace, Sandra is now healthily meta-ironic: ironic, that is, even about her use of irony. Her singing voice has developed impressively, and her renditions of "Nightingale" and "Midnight Train to Georgia" are as lovely as her "tribute song" to Versace is utterly hilarious, particulary in its dance remix format. If Sandra has a single fault, it is that she does not produce such a new show every year, given the ravenous appetite of her fans and her undoubted ability to toss off witty, literate monologues in the space of an hour. For all the laughter she produces, Sandra is a very serious artist."
An underrated performer of the highest degree!

"When we think of Sandra Bernhard we probably think of her publicity with Madonna or her lesbian character on Roseanne. I think her comedy comes third. But what people really don't know is her compelling, yet unequivocal, sense of theater.I'm Still Here Damn It! shows audiences all across the land that damn it, Sandra is funny, no hilarious! Her take on Elton John's Candle in the Wind is downright funny, her take on Courtney Love and Mariah Carey is ludicrously funny and true. And that is just it, Sandra is not afraid to voice her opinion, an opinion that most of us have but don't have the venue to voice it. I say go Sandra. Included in this CD is also a remix of one of her bits, On the Runway...funny funny funny!Part comedy, part cabaret (like the reviewer said)this chanteneuse takes care of business. Buy it, you'll love it, it grows on you, it stays with you, the smile fades gradually instead of quickly! That is what comedy is all about!"
