For Samuel Beckett is a late work in Morton Feldman's career. It was written the year he died--1987. It's designed to pay homage to the great playwright, and like Beckett's plays, is full of unorthodox structures, unfamiliar events, and passages of unusual clarity followed by moments of perplexity. The work is short, for Feldman, at 43:36, but Feldman rarely wrote for larger ensembles (he wrote no symphonies) and it seems this is because of his tendency toward the complex. He'd get lost in a symphony. Still, this is one of Feldman's masterpieces, somewhat faster paced than most of his work, but a delight nonetheless. --Paul Cook
