Synopsis

Product Description
Sam Carr was born in Friar s Point, Mississippi in 1926, the son of legendary bluesman Robert Nighthawk (AKA Robert Lee McCoy). He initially began his musical career playing bass for his father, but switched to drums in his late teens. They performed all over the Delta region in the 1940s, but by the early 1950s Nighthawk had relocated to Chicago. It was in the mid 1950s that Sam hooked up with guitarist/harmonica player (and sometimes keyboard player) Frank Frost. They were both backing Sonny Boy Williamson (AKA Rice Miller) on gigs throughout the Delta and Deep South region. Frank played guitar and Sam the drums. In 1966 they signed to Jewel Records in Shreveport, LA and recorded their next session in Nashville with legendary Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore at the board. Producer Chip Young also played bass, which gave the recordings a fuller sound, and Arthur Williams guested on harmonica. Like its predecessors, this album is rough edged, rockin juke joint Blues. These tracks were recorded in 2000 and 2001 at City Market, Helena, USA and at the Lucerne Blues Festival, Switzerland. Sam Carr and the Delta Jukes are carrying the Delta Blues torch.

CD Reviews

Gritty Blues
Bruce W. Newton | Little Rock, Arkansas, USA | 10/27/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"No doubt that Sam Carr and his Jelly Roll Kings ruled the west Arkansas - eastern Mississippi region for decades. It took a long time for them to reach the international recognition they so richly deserved. This collection of songs is representative of what Sam put together with his colleagues. Sam never missed a beat with his simple drum kit, yet laid out a complex rhythm that was the backbone for the other players. If you like down to earth blues without a lot of flash, then this is the real thing. These recordings are not over-produced and takes you back to juke joints days. Sam Carr just recently passed away (September, 2009) and he will be missed."
