"Can a composer's work be TOO special? Yes...
Sciarrino's work operates right on the edge of consciousness - like the inner monologue of a schizophrenic for whom every tiny external sound is so heightened that it becomes almost unbearable. His music makes me physically ill...it is amazing.
Occasionally he shows his hand in this piece with moments of "real" Renaissance music. I'm not sure this really works.
Vanitas is the best piece of his I've heard. but it's very difficult to find.
So get this, pour out a nice snifter of cognac, and have a couple of Xanax nearby.
BTW, the subject of this Opera is Gesualdo's murder of his wife. The specific Italianate nature of the music, both instrumental and vocal, in this work is one of its many charms. It is hyper - modern, true, but a very particular Italian sense of melos is evident everywhere."
