Wow!

"Gilels is one of the greatest Liszt pianists, and the Rhapsodie Espagnole is jaw-dropping! As is everything else on this live disc, complete with endearing wrong notes :)"
Classic Gilels Live Performance

"Most of the music heard on this album is likely to be found con countless other editions of Gilels' performances. What makes this cd so compelling is the inmediacy of the sound and the trannparency of the performance: brilliant at times and somewhat erratic but absolutely chilling and emotional. Gilels at his most human."
A pianist for listeners who think!

"This pianist, ranked as one of the most notable and refined exponents of the Russian pianism ever, gave this superb recital in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic Leningrad. This event took place on January, 18, 1968.

The recital began with the superb transcription made by Busoni on the Prelude and Fugue in d major. The breathtaking fingering and overwhelming phrasing apart of his solemn approach with absolute absence of pedal, was simply monumental.

Then came the 32 variations on an original theme on C minor. Marvelously played, with exuberant tune and resplendent expression.

Weber's Piano sonata Op. 39 was the center of gravity of the recital. Played with enraptured panache and subtleness, Gilels received a warmth ovation.

The jewel of the crown was undoubtedly, Liszt's Rhapsodie espagnole. What octaves! I have never listened previously such incandescent performance of this well known battle horse, filled of difficult passages.

Finally Prokoviev and four Fugitive visions Op. 22 completed the recital.

This album must be part of your invaluable collection. Don't miss it.
