Album DescriptionThe repertoire of this CD is intended to give an example of the skills of the Rubin Quartet while still demonstrating their expertise in as many different stylistic areas as possible. After three familiar works from the Classical, Late Romantic, and Second Viennese schools, this CD ends with a piece by the contemporary composer Jean-Christophe Feldhandler (b. 1962), in which notes, extent, dynamic, development, even symmetry come into their own. It was written as the first part of a trilogy (with differently arranged parts) and was first performed on the occasion of the 1994 Festival in Nancy by the Rubin Quartet (to whom it is also dedicated). When founding the Rubin Quartet in 1992, four female musicians from Cologne, Paris, and Amsterdam had in mind the ruby, the key to all hearts. Since then, playing in the quartet has been the center of their lives and their work has produced a widely varied range of concerts, awards, and CD recordings.
