"As a huge fan of Ernest Ansermet's, I was delighted to discover that "Royal Ballet Gala" was being issued for the first time on CD by Decca Eloquence. More music made available by this great conductor was special, having an opportunity to hear him in a setting other than Geneva with the OSR was, as the commercial says, priceless! Or so I thought. Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted to have purchased this 2CD set, and at such a bargain price from a vendor in the Marketplace, but on initial listenings something is missing. Since I'm not a trained classical musician (just a rabid fan), it's hard for me to put my finger on it, so I'm just going to go with my gut instincts. First, the excerpts from a variety of ballets are shortened -- we get the full compliment of Nutcracker nuggets but only a few pieces each from Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Coppelia, Giselle, Les Sylphides, La Boutique Fantasque and Carnaval. For me, the result is the music lacks any natural flow, or at least the flow that we've all come to expect from years of spinning all those collections of ballet highlights discs. The impression I was left with was akin to a Rolling Stones or U2 greatest hits CD, great songs over many decades but the evolution of the music and the continuity is absent. Also, while the sound and playing of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden is impeccable, I found an element lacking. Countless critics complain that Ansermet's Suisse Romande was a sub-par outfit, but one thing they did do (which I adore) was play with an unparalleled passion for their beloved conductor. It might just be my ears, but I don't hear that same effort out of the Covent Garden group -- I can hear the responses now, perhaps it is because their sound is so perfect that it is effortless :-). Anyway, just one listener's opinion, I'd be happy to hear yours too."
