Sheila Benson said the film is "passionate and brave, an absorbing film", FX Feeney said "it is a valuable document, it has life".....Ronee Blakley has recorded her songs for Elektra and Warner Bros, both available on Collector's Choice, and is known for the movie soundtrack to Robert Altman's "Nashville" available on MCA/Universal. "I Played It For You" features live recordings produced by The Band's producer Rob Fraboni at famed Shangri La studios in Malibu, California. The film was shot by Ed Lachman cinematographer on "Traffic". Ronee has been nominated during her career for the Academy Award, Golden Globes, and Grammy and has won some international awards. This film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was most recently seen at the Silverlake Film Festival. The subject of the film and the songs is the love affair between Ronee and Wim, between Ronee and her music, and the work Ronee and Wim were doing with Nick Ray, director of "Rebel Without a Cause" at the time of his death in the movie "Lightning Over Water", including the recording of the title song for that film, which received best film of the year awards in Germany. CD Reviews

A great unknown
R. Pierotti | Kansas, USA | 07/06/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Ronnee Blakely is one of the great mysteries. She is a superb singer with a style all her own and an accomplished actress, yet she is virtually unknown. This is a woman who was nominated for an Oscar in her first film, Robert Altman's classic Nashville, for playing a character who really is the heart of the story. Her songs and performance comprise most of what is memorable about this film. Her album Welcome was one of the best albums of the 1970's, but unfortunately it let her be pigeonholed as a southern country artist, when in fact she is a Stanford-educated folk singer and rock singer from Idaho. This album is her best work since Welcome and consists of a number of songs that are in no way country. This is a woman with more soul and power in her voice than practically anyone since Janis Joplin and yet most people would not even recognize her name. If you liked Nashville, or her earlier albums you can't go wrong with this one, which is the soundtrack to a film she did with her then husband, the wonderful German Director, Wim Wenders."
