Amazon.comWhen Ron Holloway solos on this album, he's not merely running through a different scale with each chord change; he's constructing new melodies as vibrant as the main theme even as they provide a harmonic echo to that theme. Listen to him take Duke Ellington's "Caravan" or Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" and forego speed and flash to rework those famous themes into new lines nearly as memorable. And on the ballad standards, "I Thought About You" and "My One and Only Love," listen to how he holds a single note and makes it breathe with a lover's hopes and sighs. Holloway also included three strong originals among the eight standards. Unfortunately, he didn't include any explicit references to his long R&B background (he has played with Root Boy Slim, Deanna Bogart and Dr. John as well as Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins). --Geoffrey Himes
