Synopsis

Amazon.com
Past recordings have often found guitarist Ron Affif leaning more toward the athletic side of his playing than the lyrical. On this solo effort, he exhibits an unexpected and welcome reflective and sensitive side. With much of his prodigious technique taken up supplying simultaneous harmony, melody, bass and rhythm, there is apparently less energy for running lines through chord changes. The acoustic guitar and almost-acoustic-sounding electric guitar tracks add to the mood, allowing the aggressive character of his touch to come to the fore without getting too pugilistic. The repertoire consists largely of romantic standards ("I've Never Been in Love Before," "My Romance," and "What Is This Thing Called Love") and some audibly heartfelt Affif originals ("Mark," "Charene," and "Holly"). Solotude may not break any new musical ground but it offers many musical pleasures: personality, precision, and passion as well as beautifully recorded sound. It sets a romantic mood, and like Coltrane's Ballads, proves that mood music need not be elevator music. --Michael Ross

CD Reviews

Affif stretches out
Louise Pearson | Westlake Village, CA United States | 08/24/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is an arched box full of flavors and I haven't been able to get it out of my car cd player since I found it. Affif glides from straight ahead Joe Pass-like playing to a relaxed traditional accoustic sound, to his signature speed demon style The choice of tunes is as tasteful as can be, and he gives fresh meaning to old standards. Guitar players will aspire to this kind of treatment."
Affif need others to interplay with

"This is a rather bland solo guitar set. Joe pass's "Virtuoso" is far suoperior. I really belive that Ron Affif needs others to interact with. His 52nd street themes is a masterpiece. It is one of my personal favorite jazz guitar record ever! Saying that solitude was of a disapointment. Keep on looking."
