"Siegfried Wagner (1869-1930), son of Richard Wagner and grandson of Franz Liszt, composed some 19 operas, more than his father. This album contains arias and scenes for baritone from 10 of Siegfried Wagner's operas:
Sonnenflammen op. 8
Der Bärenhäuter op. 1
Herzog Wildfang op. 2
Der Kobold op. 3
Bruder Lustig op. 4
Banadietrich op. 6
Schwarzschwanenreich op. 7
Der Heidenkönig op. 9
Der Schmied von Marienburg op. 10
Rainulf und Adelasia op. 14
Baritone Roman Trekel has a gorgeous velvety voice that captures the drama and various emotional nuances in these selections. This album is a unique opportunity to hear a fine composer who is rarely heard, presumably because of being overshadowed by his father. Some of these operas have never even been premiered.
Siegfried Wagner's approach is different from his father Richard's, in that his characters tend to tell the stories as opposed to having the battles or events enacted on the stage. The result is especially effective in an album such as this, where one singer can telescope the main events and excitement of the drama within the confines of his aria, and the aria can tell much of the story. Anyone who enjoys the great and entertaining ballads of the nineteenth century German composer Carl Loewe would also enjoy this album, because of the dramatic narrations being sung. And if you are looking for opera that is out of the ordinary, this is something unique and rarely heard.
