Former Popular, Emmy-winning TV weatherman in NYC (WPIX and on Long Island s Channel 12) Roberto Tirado offers these mostly romantic songs taken from the great American Songbook of once very popular song selections. Opening with Matt Dennis evergreen Angel Eyes, Roberto makes it a Sinatra-style take but with less emotionalisms, although with a very turned-on style. Laura is next and Tirado keeps the tradition of an eerie wonderment in search for the elusive Laura. Then a very peppy Green Eyes comes ashore and is coupled with a Spanish centerpiece, followed by Flamingo, a song that was once No. 1 when Ellington backed Herb Jeffries. Tirado does it differently and nicely. Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen s That Old Black Magic comes front and center with a great jazz feeling and socko styling backed with a strong Wayne Sabella piano that almost talks. I Had the Craziest Dream is an old Harry James/Helen Forrest piece and Tirado loves this tune as he brings in the original intro and follows with a dreamlike offering of this once big time song. You'll really enjoy Mamselle. Like most of the tunes on this album, it is a song of the past that enjoyed great popularity in its time, but has rarely been performed since. Same thing applies to Golden Earrings, a song from the motion picture of the same name. Peggy Lee did it justice originally, but Tirado gets into the song and verse and revives it beautifully. Nina Never Knew, the Milton Drake piece is Sinatra like. After all, Sinatra recorded almost every written song, which means that other singers love to sing those tunes as well. Tirado holds his own on this one. The finale, Star Dust performed sincerely as the closer with only piano backing is another one of hundreds of offerings of the same name. Hoagy Carmichael would be pleased with Roberto Tirado as he opens the song gently and closes it with strong vocal richness. Wayne Sabella is genius on the piano and brings it all together with Chris Roselli on the drums and Tim Givens on bass. This album will sell. When s the sequel due out?
