Synopsis

Album Description
2006 archive release containing previously unreleased live performances from the former Hawkwind member, recorded a few years prior to his death of a heart attack in 1988. Ship Of Fools captures Robert Calvert on the tour to promote his Test Tube Conceived album in November 1986. The set list features some interesting choices in terms of solo material and Hawkwind songs Robert had been closely associated with. The set includes 'On Line' and 'Telekinesis' from Test Tube Conceived. 'Ned Ludd' and 'Lord Of The Hornets' from Freq and more interestingly from Robert?s time with Hawkwind, 'Orgone Accumulator', 'Damnation Alley' and the song 'Robot' which had originally appeared on the 1979 Hawkwind album P.X.R.5. 21 tracks. Voiceprint. 2006.

Robert Calvert - 'Newcastle 1986: Ship Of Fools' (Voiceprint
Mike Reed | USA | 08/05/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Two disc, twenty song archive unreleased performance of Hawkwind's resident poet. Not sure, but I believe I have have an edited single-disc bootleg version of this show. Either way, sound quality isn't great but acceptable. I more or less need to be in the 'right mood' to properly enjoy this title. The Calvert material I liked best were "Lord Of The Hornets", "Acid Rain" and his signature tune "All The Machines Are Quiet". Thought he did an okay job on the Hawkwind tracks that he chose to play on this tour, like "Orgone Accumulator", "Quark, Strangness And Charm", "Days Of The Underground" and the rocking "Damnation Alley". 'Ship Of Fools' is just one of the several such titles that Voiceprint has unearthed. This one was a date off his UK tour in support of his 'Test Tube Conceived' lp which I, for one have always thought it was one of his better efforts. Enjoy."
